JAMMU, Nov 24: A Division Bench of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court comprising Chief Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice M A Chowdhary has expressed concern over recent loss of 39 lives in Assar road accident and directed Divisional Commissioner Jammu and IG Traffic J&K to disclose the steps taken to prevent such mishaps in Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban.
After hearing Advocates S S Ahmed, Syed Asim Hashmi, Zulkarnain Choudhary, Rahul Raina and Adnan Mushtaq for the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) pertaining to unsafe road conditions on the Mughal Road and National Highway particularly in Doda, Batote, Kishtwar and Ramban districts, DB observed, “it has been highlighted that frequent accidents in these areas have resulted in the loss of many lives, which are preventable if appropriate preventive measures are put in place”.
“We request the petitioners to suggest preventive measures for the issuance of appropriate directions to the concerned authorities”, the DB said, adding “the State respondents also should come up with viable solutions, inasmuch as, ensuring road safety falls within their primary responsibility”.
The DB directed the Inspector General of Police (Traffic to submit an account of the measures taken and also required to be taken to prevent these recurring accidents by the next date and also directed the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, to submit his report regarding the conditions of the Highway/National Highways in these sectors and also offer his own inputs for prevention of accidents.
