JAMMU, Aug 9: In a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by a practicing Advocate Summit Nayyar seeking implementation of Plastic Waste Management Rules, Division Bench of State High Court comprising First Puisine Judge Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar and Justice BS Walia today directed the State to adopt the rules made by the Government of India on March 18, 2016 and file status report within a period of three weeks.
In the PIL, it has been submitted that the use of polythene and plastic bags despite being banned by the State Government is causing havoc in the entire State and the impact of plastic bags on environment was quite devastating.
“While there are many objections to the banning of plastic bags based solely for convenience, the damage to the environment needs to be controlled. There is no way to strictly limit the effects of plastic bags on the environment because there is no disposal method that will really help eliminate the problem”, the petitioner said.
After hearing Senior Advocate Sunil Sethi with Advocate Summit Nayyar, the DB directed State to adopt Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016 made by the Government of India on March 18, 2016 and file status report within the period of three weeks.
