JAMMU, Oct 18: In a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking protection of ancient Hindu temples, a Division Bench of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court comprising Chief Justice N Kotiwar Singh and Justice Moksha Khajuria Kazmi today directed Union of India and UT of Jammu & Kashmir to file response before December 11, 2023.
“Many temples in the UT of J&K are in dilapidated condition and during militancy many temples which were already in dilapidated condition were mostly destroyed and their land has been illegally encroached upon”, the PIL said, adding “the main objective behind the knocking the doors of the court is to ensure protection and preservation of ancient and old temples which are existing in the UT of J&K and to also rebuild/reconstruct the damaged religious Hindu temples which are currently in dilapidated condition”.
“The land mafia and people with vested interest are encroaching upon the land of the temples and no authority and statutory body is taking cognizance of the same”, the PIL said.
