DB orders status quo on Gole Mahal

JAMMU, Dec 24: Division Bench of State High Court comprising Chief Justice M M Kumar and Justice Hasnain Massodi today ordered status quo with regard to construction on the land near or underneath the 150 years old Gole Mahal at Hazuri Bagh, Talab Tillo.
The direction was passed in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by one Balbir Singh seeking protection of Gole Mahal, which was built by a Dogra king about 150 yrs old.
The Division Bench issued notice to Chief Secretary, Director Archaeology Department, Union Ministry and Archaeology Survey of India. Senior AAG accepted notice on behalf of State whereas ASGI K K Pangotra accepted notice on behalf of Union of India.
In the meantime, DB ordered that status-quo with regard to construction on the land near or underneath the Mahal should be maintained. “The respondents should take effective steps to ensure that any property dealer, contractor or builder do not change the nature of the building or the land any further. The status report should be filed before the next date of hearing”, the DB said.
