DB suspends life-imprisonment awarded to woman for killing husband

JAMMU, July 28: Division Bench of State High Court comprising Justice Bansi Lal Bhat and Justice Janak Raj Kotwal today suspended the life-imprisonment of Bimla Devi, who was convicted and sentenced by the Additional Sessions Judge Udhampur in murder of her husband.
After hearing Senior Advocate BS Slathia with Advocate Meenakshi Slathia appearing for the convict, DB observed, “the accused is a woman and it is not denied that her two minor children stand deprived of parental care”.
“Co-accused Suram Chand has been acquitted. These factors, taken cumulatively, warrant admission of petitioner on bail.  The application is allowed and petitioner is enlarged on bail, subject to furnishing of surety bonds in an amount of Rs one lakh and personal bond of the same amount to the satisfaction of Registrar Judicial of this court”, the DB said.
The DB, however, directed that the applicant/convict shall attend this court on each and every date of hearing of her appeal against conviction and sentence. The applicant/convict shall keep the SHO, Police Station Ramnagar informed of her whereabouts. The applicant/convict shall not leave the State without seeking prior permission from this court and shall not engage in any criminal activity.
