JAMMU Sept 4: There has been mixed reaction over Central Government’s decision of including four more languages as official languages of J&K UT.
While lauding the decision the Dogra Brahman Pratinidhi Sabha (DBPS) has impressed upon the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister to promote other regional languages in UT Jammu & Kashmir also in view inclusion of Dogri, Hindi, Kashmiri and English as official languages, apart from the existing Urdu, in the UT J&K.
The Cabinet decision will not only bring ease of governance, but also ease of citizen participation in governance in UT, the statement issued by the Sabha said. This was a long pending demand of DBPS to declare Hindi & Dogri as a official language and the same stands fulfilled by the PM and Union Home Minister, said Ved Parkash Sharma, president of Sabha while interacting with media persons here.
Dogra Sadar Sabha (DSS) while welcoming the decision said the organization was instrumental in getting the Dogri language included in the 8th Schedule after years of struggle and agitation in the erstwhile State and at national level when it was included among the national languages on 22nd December 2003. The DSS got a shot in the arm when the Dogri language became one of the official languages in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, it added.
The DSS members in one voice under their president, Gulchain Singh Charak lauded Centre’s decision to include Dogri along with Hindi and Kashmiri, Urdu and English as the five official languages of Jammu and to one major oppression that was not only against vast Dogri speaking population of all religions/faiths but also threatened the very distinct recognition of the large Dogra population of J&K. They include Muslim Dogras in Pakistan occupied areas and those who are settled in many other countries of Gulf and Europe.
Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) spokesperson, J&K, Chetan Wanchoo, welcomed Centre’s decision to include Dogri, Hindi and Kashmiri, Urdu and English as the five official languages of Jammu and Kashmir.
