LEH, Jan 7: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Leh, Avny Lavasa today inaugurated a 15-day Birding Guide Training programme at conference hall of her office, for the unemployed boys and girls.
The programme is being organized by LAHDC, Leh and has been financed by Tourism Department under the scheme ‘Promotion of theme based tourism program’ in collaboration with Wildlife Department, WCBCL and ALTOA Leh.
Speaking on the occasion, the DC said that tourism has a huge opportunity in Ladakh with still unexplored avenues and birding would be an important aspect of tourism itinerary. She said that wildlife in Ladakh is unique and it could benefit in providing a good career and income opportunity. But at the same time she stressed to reciprocate care and respect towards our environment and nature.
Addressing all the participating young boys and girls, the DC said that they are going to be the first official trained guides in bird watching and they could become role models by setting a good example for future. She said that besides sensitizing them about wildlife in Ladakh, the training will give them a holistic understanding of ecology, social issues like stray dog menace, pollution of water bodies, wildlife protection and role of humans that will help them go towards responsible and sustainable tourism.
President WCBCL, Lobzang Vishuda, gave a brief about the organization, their objectives and activities. He pointed out the need to have a well framed regulation for birding tourism considering the deteriorating condition of wildlife in Ladakh. President ALTOA, Tsetan Angchuk also spoke on the occasion.
Wildlife Warden, Pankaj Raina and Assistant Director Tourism, Tsering Angmo, were also present and spoke on the occasion. AD Tourism said that the objective of conducting this training is to promote birding aspect to expand tourism sector and provide youth with more job opportunity.
