Alleged manhandling of BJP leader, use of force on mob

JAMMU, June 21: Deputy Commissioner Ramban Shabir Ahmed Bhat today ordered an enquiry into the alleged manhandling of local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and use of force on the agitating people by the Ramban Police. The enquiry will be conducted by the Assistant Commissioner Revenue and he will submit report to the Deputy Commissioner within a period of 10 days.
Reports said that yesterday large number of people gathered in the town and held protest demonstration in support of their demand that new ration cards should be issued without submission of affidavit, which costs over Rs 70 to each applicant.
After agitating for sometime, the protesters led by BJP leader Neelam Singh Langeh started moving towards the Deputy Commissioner’s office to apprise him of the difficulties being faced by them in getting new ration cards. On way to Deputy Commissioner’s office, the protesters blocked the National Highway.
A police spokesman said that Ramban Police tried its level best to convince the protesters to lift the blockade but Neelam Singh Langeh didn’t allow the same and entered into scuffle with the cops prompting the SHO Inspector Ravinder Parihar to arrest him for creating law and order problem.
However, the people alleged that BJP leader was brutally beaten up and dragged by the SHO in full public view. They further alleged that ASI posted in the Ramban Police Station also used force on the protesters.
Last evening, Beopar Mandal Ramban decided to observe bandh against the alleged police atrocities. As per the decision, complete bandh was observed in Ramban town today. In the morning, people again gathered in the town and staged massive protest demonstration against police and civil administration.
Later, they blocked the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway by staging sit-in for about one hour. Sensing gravity of the situation, Deputy Commissioner Shabir Ahmed Bhat called a meeting of the prominent citizens of the town at Dak Bangalow.
Following the meeting, Deputy Commissioner announced that an enquiry has been ordered into the alleged manhandling of BJP leader by SHO and use of force by ASI on mob.
“The enquiry will be conducted by ACR Ghansham Bali and he has been directed to submit report within a period of 10 days”, Deputy Commissioner said when contacted, adding people also alleged that the said ASI has also been harassing them in the past”.
To a question, Deputy Commissioner said that issue of new ration cards was resolved yesterday evening only when he passed necessary instructions to the concerned authorities.
