REASI, Sept 15: After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to all the citizens of India to shun use of single use plastic and made the earth free from plastic waste, Deputy Commissioner Reasi, Indu Kanwal Chib has set an example for others by picking plastic waste ever morning during her morning walk.
Seeing the DC getting her hands dirty by picks plastic bottles, bags and other such litter, the locals also join her ‘shramdaan’ or voluntary service. Besides this, with the DC’s initiative, the administration has confiscated 10 kg plastic bags in last 4 days and cleared two garbage dumps- one at ward number 3 and another at ward number 1 near DIET Reasi. Approximately, 35 kg plastic waste was yielded from the two dumps.
To cope with the scarcity of carry bags, post ban on plastic bags in the district, the DC has begun conducting meetings and awareness sessions with locals, especially women, to help them create Self Help Groups for making eco-friendly bags made of fibre or rags.
She has also made a plan for disposal of waste generated by fruit and vegetable vendors of Reasi town. The waste has been proposed to be collected in a separate bin later to be fed to stray cattle shelter at Sulla, on the outskirts of the town.
The DC along with employees and elected members of Reasi Municipal Committee are going door to door and educating people to take responsibility of garbage around their homes and business establishments.
