UDHAMPUR, Mar 3: Red Cross Mela and Sports Carnival was organized for the first time aimed at raising funds for the District Red Cross Society and creating mass awareness with participation from across the district.
The Mela will be spread over a period of one month which will include cultural programmes, joy rides, sports, shooting, hanging worlds, children games and play world, roller coaster ride, ethnic food courts, stalls of various departments and organisations, lucky draw contest and other attractions. More than 60 Red Cross volunteers drawn from the entire district along with Civil Defence volunteers will manage the mela.
Chairman, District Red Cross Society Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary inaugurated the Mela in the presence of DIG Udhampur-Reasi range Surinder Kumar Gupta, SSP Suleiman Choudhary, ACD A S Rana, CPO Rakesh Jamwal, ACD Joginder Singh Rai, PO DRDA Dr Jagdish Mehra, CMO Dr Chander Parkash, CEO Bishen Singh. Other senior officers of district, prominent citizens, Presidents of Bar Association, Beopar Mandal, Chamber of Commerce, Industries Association, various NGOs, social, political and religious organisations were also present on the occasion.
More than a dozen artists enthralled the audience with their performances in music, songs, dance and recreation. Romalo Ram, Shivi Badyal, Arshi Kalas, Suraj dogra, Naveen Punjabi, Rafia Bano and a band of musicians presented a colourful cultural and musical programme.
DDC outlined the purpose of Mela indicating mass awareness, participation in Red Cross networking and generation of financial resources. He informed the gathering that DRSC Udhampur has provided highest assistance of Rs 40 lakh including relief to accident victims, medical aid to more than 200 poor and needy patients, educational assistance to more than 100 orphans and poor students apart from carrying out a number of other activities.
DIG Surinder Gupta lauded the efforts of DRSC in extending immediate relief to victims of accidents and natural calamities in last one year and also generating huge resources for the society. Departments of Rural Development and PHE presented contribution on Rs 2.15 lakh and Rs 1.03 lakh respectively.
