Chisinau, Sep 4 : Another person injured in an explosion at a gas station in the southeastern Romanian city of Crevedia died on Monday morning, bringing the death toll from the incident to four people, the Floreasca emergency hospital in Bucharest said.
A series of explosions occurred on August 19 at the gas station in Crevedia, 13 kilometers (8 miles) from the Romanian capital. The Romanian Health Ministry said on August 31 that three people were killed and 58 were injured in the incident.
“A patient died this morning at Floreasca Hospital, who had been in critical condition with burns over 95% of his body surface since being admitted to the hospital,” a spokesperson for the medical facility told reporters.
The first gas tank explosion occurred at 8:30 p.m. local time (16:30 GMT) on August 19, bringing traffic to a standstill. Despite firefighters’ efforts, the fire spread to other gas tanks, causing several more explosions. The fire was not extinguished until the next day. Rescuers evacuated more than 3,000 people from a 700-meter (2,300-foot) radius of the emergency zone. An anti-crisis group has been set up in response to the incident. Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu ordered an inspection of all gas stations in the country, with those not complying with requirements to be closed immediately.
