SUCHETGARH, Apr 5: Taranjit Singh Tony, J&K chairman Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for Administrative Engagement and Minority Affairs, and District Development Council (DDC) Member Suchetgarh today sought old liquor policy in the UT claiming that the present one is full of flaws and losses to the tune  of several hundreds crores.
Addressing the meeting at village Sai in Suchetgarh Constituency, the senior AAP leader said that the present liquor policy is flawed as it has incurred losses worth hundreds of crores of rupees to exchequer besides giving way to overcharging and compromising the quality of the liquor.
Tony said that the J&K Government being the welfare state should not allow such malpractices under the garb of the present excise policy. He also warned of more trouble in the coming times alleging that the ingredients used for brewing the liquor these days are of low quality and can prove fatal as the case in other states.
The senior AAP leader demanded that people from outside the J&K should not be allowed to run mining and liquor businesses in the UT to safeguard the interests of the domiciles and also to retain good business practices as outsiders can indulge in malpractices. He also demanded to reintroduce the rules for opening of wine shops, especially the ones which debars vendors from opening shops near schools and places of worship.
Tony said that instead of giving preference to outsiders and big players, the government should encourage the local vendors for generating employment and also ensuring purity and good practices because local vendors are more accountable and can be held responsible for any kind of hanky-panky in the business of liquor.
