NEW DELHI : Reiterating that the overwhelming opinion in the party was in favour of elevation of Congress vice-preisdent Rahul Gandhi to the post of president, the Congress, however, said a decision in this regard would be taken by the top leadership of the party.
”A large number of party workers feel that he should take over the post of party president. In fact, many in the party feel that it is the appropriate time (for Mr Gandhi’s elevation). However, a decision in this regard has to be taken by the top leadership of the party.
”We hope it is done soon,” AICC spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters here in reply to a question on whether after the success of the Grand Alliance, comprising the Congress, JD-U and RJD, in Bihar, Mr Gandhi would be made party president.
Mr Singhvi said the energy infused into the Congress cadres after the victory of the Grand Alliance in Bihar would be maintained.
Asked if the party would henceforth go in for alliances in other states with local parties, he said, ”Wherever alliance are needed, we will go for alliances and wherever we feel we need to go alone, we will do so. It is not a one size fits all approach for all states.” (UNI)
