NEW DELHI, May 4: The birthday of the Delhi gangrape victim, which falls on May 10, should be declared as ‘National Women Security Day’, former Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta demanded today.
The Delhi BJP leader said he will place the demand with the authorities concerned soon.
“Five months have passed since the tragic incident took place. Enough slogans have been shouted, promises have been made, initiatives have been taken, laws have been proposed but there has been no conclusion yet,” he said, addressing a press conference with officials of NGO ‘Sampurna’.
Gupta said the NGO has already decided to observe May 10 as Women Security Day in Delhi.
“By doing so, we will not only be able to give a strong message that women security is priority for civil society, masses and policy makers, but we will also be able to set yearly targets and monitor the progress too,” he said.
“The brutal rape forced the nation to retrospect about women security issues. We should remember that people will not always come out to the streets like they did after the incident. We must do something so that the society does not forget the brutal incident,” he added.
A Sampurna official said it has started a six month- long women security movement under which they plan to cover 500 vulnerable areas and spread awareness about issues like women security, dowry, female foeticide among others.
“We will be holding self-defence workshops and debating sessions for women on May 10. We also want to question the government about how the Nirbhaya fund of Rs 100 crore declared by the Government is being used,” Vice-President of Sampurna, Asha Jain said. (PTI)
