JAMMU, May 10: District Development Council Member Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony has demanded that journalists should be declared as frontline COVID-19 warriors.
In a handout issued to media, Tony expressed grief and sorrow over the loss of precious lives of several journalists while performing their professional duties on ground like all other frontline warriors and emphasized that in such a situation it is necessary that they be immediately declared as frontline warriors by the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory.
“While as many as 12 states have included media persons in the category of ‘frontline COVID-19 warriors’ category, I fail to understand as to why the J&K UT administration has so far been reluctant to do so,” he added.
The DDC member said, “Several states have already declared journalists as frontline warriors and the same should be done without any further delay by the Jammu and Kashmir Government. These media persons from electronic or print media risking their lives are selflessly working 24X7 on ground to provide valuable information to the people in this hour of unprecedented crisis. Therefore it becomes the duty of the State to make them and their families secure by bringing them within the category of Corona warriors.”
