POONCH, May 2: National Conference MLA Javed Rana demanded that Government should declare Mendhar as drought-hit region.
While organizing a peaceful protest in the area today, Rana acknowledged the sufferings of the people and released an amount of Rs 20 lakh from CDF for deployment of water tankers in worst affected areas of Mankote, Balakote and Mendhar. The PHE Department has been asked to supply water to all these areas with these funds.
Criticizing the Government, Rana pointed out the inefficiencies of the department. He said Chief Minister had made commitments to release funds for certain schemes during her Poonch visit in March. However, no money has been released so far despite repeated appeals. Some funds have been released for certain other unspecified works which their concerned party workers had special interest in.
Demanding a probe in the working of ground water department, Rana stated the department has failed to cater to the needs of the people. One of the commitments made by the CM during her recent visit was to install more hand pumps in the region due to its drought hit condition. Even with sufficient funds available under BADP/TSP, the concerned department has been unsuccessful in basic task of installing hand pumps in the region, he added.
