Military procurement worth Rs.3000 crore has recently been approved by the Defence Ministry to update the requirements in equipping our armed forces with the demands in tune with emerging needs. This procurement includes Brahmos Supersonic cruise missile for Navy’s two stealth frigates and armoured recovery vehicles for the Army’s Arjun main battle tanks.
To provide more sharp teeth to our Navy, India is procuring two stealth frigates at a cost of USD 1 billion and both the ships will be equipped with indigenously developed Brahmos missiles. The go-ahead for the acquisition was given by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC). This Council, it may be recalled, is the highest decision making body on procurement.
As regards Brahmos missiles, the readers may recall, is indigenously designed missile which is tested and proven supersonic cruise missile and is going to form the primary weapon on – board these ships. Armoured Recovery Vehicles (ARVs) for Indian’ Army’s main battle tank, Arjun have also been approved by the DAC. The ARVs are designed and developed by the DRDO and would be manufactured by defence public sector undertaking BEML.
