The bill for setting up village courts (Dehi Adalats) received approval from the Legislative Council. Now it goes to the Governor for his nod as the final disposal. The purpose is to bring justice at the doorsteps of people in far flung areas who remain deprived of justice owing to various debilities. On the face of it, this is a noble decision to mitigate the suffering, debility and deprivation of our rural population. However, with the addition of this, we will have three-layer justice administering system in the State viz, the existing jurisdictions of judiciary, Panchayat and now the Dehi Adalat. We think that there should be some sort of coordination between the Panchayats and Dehi Adalats as far as their functioning and delivery are concerned. We want our village people to be provided as many facilities as are possible. The purpose is to provide them social, economic and political fair-deals so that they are able to improve the quality of life.
