Delay in rehabilitation of refugees to create more problems: Gupta

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, Jan 1:  Emphas-izing the need for settlement of all issues pertaining to the refugees and migrants, especially the return and rehabilitation of Kashmiris to the Valley of Kashmir, the former Union Minister and MLA, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta observed that the delay is bound to cause more problems and increased expenses.
Commenting on the ruling Congress and National Conference (NC) leaders statements for one time settlement of the issues of the Pakistan refugees and those of the externally and internally displaced persons of the State, Prof. Gupta said that mere loud talking and utterances would not be sufficient but there is the need for practical actions.
“Such promises were also made in the manifestoes of both these parties even in 1983, 1996 and later on elections, Prof Gupta said.  The former Chief Minister and chief of the National Conference in December 1996, had pronounced that there would be no refugee or migrant problem after two years in J&K. Now over 15 years have passed but the problems are getting compounded and the number of Kashmiri migrant families registered in Jammu have gone up from 27000 to about 40000 now despite huge expenditure’’, he added.
He further pointed out that these ruling and other leaders many a times have stated that Kashmiriyat is incomplete without Pandits but the question is that what practical is being done to get the wounds healed and restore the old traditions.
Prof. Gupta said that there are hundreds of families from Jammu areas too, who were uprooted because of terrorism.  The ruling leaders owe an explanation that why these displaced people are not being rehabilitated in their respective districts and why they are being extended different treatment to that of migrants from the Valley.
