Delay in stipend leaves NIT students in fix

SRINAGAR, Mar 3: Hundreds of meritorious students pursuing masters at the National Institute and Technology are frustrated due to an undue delay in disbursement of monthly stipend.
The M-Tech students of batch-2020 have not been paid the postgraduate scholarship since their course began in September 2020. “We are qualified to get the monthly allowance as indicated by MHRD’s Post Graduate Scholarship Scheme to full-time GATE qualified students and the arrival of the payment is in effect pointlessly deferred,” a student said.
The students lamented that they are finding it difficult to pay their second semester fees. “We depend on the allowance for our monthly expenses and find it difficult to pay the enrollment charges of the second semester without the financial assistance provided by the institute,” a student said, adding that the institute is withholding the stipend despite completing all the formalities including their physical reporting.
To worsen things, the students have been asked to complete formalities for the second semester in three days. “It is disturbing us as we don’t have money to deposit the fees. The administration of the institute must look into it,” another student said.
She added the students are unable to fathom the reason behind this delay as the majority of NITs and IITs across the country have released the monthly stipend on time.
Registrar National Institute of Technology, Kaiser Andrabi, told Excelsior that the students could not report for physical verification because of COVID 19 and that delayed the stipend. “The classes were held online, but physical verifications of documents could not be done. I will take up the matter with the academic and finance section so that students do not face problems. We are here for them,” he said.
