LMD imposes Rs 40,000 fine

KATHUA, Aug 21: The innocent students of Government Medical College (GMC) Kathua were being duped on the name of concessional rates of medical books and were charged much higher rate than the actual rates.
Acting on a specific complaint, the Enforcement Team of Legal Metrology Department, (LMD) Kathua today booked a Medical books supplier M/s Ahuja Book Company Pvt. Ltd. New Delhi for opening sale centers within the premises of Government Medical College, Kathua and offering books for sale without carrying MRP and other mandatory declarations required to be mentioned on the books. The team seized various packages of medical books and issued seizer memo to the supplier.
The books were sold on three fold higher price than the actual price and student were offered 20% of discount to give an impression to them that the supplier is selling the books on confessional rates to dupe the innocent students. The medical students also objected over the malpractice going on inside the premises of the Medical College. It is also matter of serious concern that who has granted permission to Delhi based books supplier to set up the sale counter inside the premises of Medical College and who is getting commission on the sale of books on higher rates, questioned the students.
The supplier accepted the fault on his part and requested the Department to dispose off the case. The Assistant Controller, LM Kathua, Kuldeep Raj imposed Rs.40,000/ as penalty with written assurance from the supplier that he will return all the seized packages of books to the publisher for carrying out necessary rectifications required under rules.
The fine was also recovered on spot by the Department.
