Deptt of Posts accelerating modernization process: CPMG

JAMMU, Oct 14: To create customer friendly environment and provide better services to public in the State, the Department of Posts is accelerating modernization process of post offices in a big way.
Disclosing this at an interaction with media persons after assuming the charge of new Chief Postmaster General of the J&K Circle, Chander Prakash said various activities were taken out by the Department during the National Postal Week celebrations which started on October 9 and will culminate tomorrow.
He said the National Postal Week commenced with World Post Day and many programmes were organized in J&K to educate the customers and general public about traditional and new mail parcel services, Saving Bank schemes and Life Insurance Services.
Highlighting the future plans of the Department of Posts, the Chief P M G said that India Post has planned its transformation to shoulder more responsibilities and for this it has tied up with eminent companies under Information Technology Modernization Project for skill development of all postal officials and computerization of all 1.55 Post Offices up to village level. Post Offices in the cities have already been computerized and rural Post Offices are also covered by the end of next year, he added.
Mr Prakash said in J&K the work has started on prestigious project and soon core banking services will also be made available in major Post Offices and ATMs will be installed at select Post Offices. Under Project Arrow many Post Offices have been modernized and modernization many other Post Offices in the State is in process, he added.
He said for improving services to the customers, Department of Posts is not only computerizing services, but it is also providing online tracking of mails and consignments of Speed Post, Express Parcel, registered letters, money orders, registered parcels etc. By networking of services through Central server out mail services, parcel services, money transfer services, Post Office Saving Bank and Postal Life Insurance will soon be available to the public in a more customer friendly environment, he added.
He also announced that the Department in the State is going to organize All India Postal Cricket Tournament from October 21 to 25 at Srinagar. The teams from 13 postal circles will participate, Mr Prakash added.
Director Postal Services Jagdish Gupta was also present in the press conference.
