SRINAGAR, Mar 12: Despite fare hike ordered by the Government, the commuters today alleged that the transporters on various Srinagar routes are resorting to overcharging with the administration failing in keeping a check on them.
Scores of commuters told Excelsior that despite the increase in the fare by the Government, the transporters are not adhering to the directives and have set the rates on their own.
“Where they have to charge Rs 6, they are charging Rs 8, for Rs 5, they are charging Rs 8 and for Rs 12 they are charging Rs 15, which is not as per the directives,” said Bilal Ahmad, a commuter.
The commuters said that they understand that the prices of fuel have gone up, and keeping that in consideration, the Government has given them a 19% per cent hike, “but they should adhere to that which they are not and are resorting to open voilations,” the commuters said.
The commuters said that the administration is not taking any steps to make sure that the Government orders are adhered to and that there is no such violation taking place. “The Traffic Department as well as the Regional Transport Officer, Kashmir should carry out frequent checks and should make sure that the transporters are not over-charging,” they said.
Earlier, the transporters across J&K had demanded a hike in fare for which they had threatened to go on a strike, following which the Government assured them that the issue of fare hike along with other matters will be addressed.
