SRINAGAR : Despite fresh rain, the National Highway connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, remained through for one-way traffic as hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, left Jammu for Srinagar this morning.
However, dozens of villages, including those near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir remained cut off from the rest of their district headquarters due to accumulation of several feet of snow during the past one month.
The Highway linking the Ladakh region with the rest of the state besides Mughal road remained closed since December last year due to snow and slippery road conditions. A traffic police official told UNI that hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers and trucks loaded with essentials, left different parts of the Jammu region for Kashmir valley this morning despite rain. However, no vehicle was allowed from Kashmir valley to Jammu as only one-way traffic will continue till further orders, he said.
However, there was no respite for the people who remained cut off with the rest of valley due to closure of roads in the north Kashmir district of Kupwara and Bandipora. A number of villages near the LoC also remained cut off with their respective district and tehsil headquarters due to heavy accumulation of snow.
The National Highway, connecting Ladakh region with the rest of the valley also remained closed as more than six feet of snow had accumulated at Zojila, Meenmarg and other places during the past several weeks. The highway was closed in December last year due to slippery road conditions and snow.
The Mughal road, linking the south Kashmir with Jammu region, also remained closed due to snow at several places. (AGENCIES)
