Detailed survey underway to assess hailstorm loss: Ajaz

JAMMU, Apr 4: Minister of State for Revenue, Ajaz Ahmad Khan today informed the Legislative Assembly that on February 5, 2013 some losses were reported to the standing Rabi crops in parts of Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts due to heavy rains/hailstorm. As per preliminary reports prepared by the Agriculture Department Jammu, the loss has been assessed between 70 to 85 per cent to the crops.
The Minister further said that reports have also been received from the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir regarding damages caused to the crops due to hailstorm. However, the concerned Deputy Commissioners have been asked to re-verify the actual loss as well as type of crops affected. The exercise on this account is being conducted by the concerned revenue field functionaries, the Minister maintained.
Replying to a Calling Attention Notice, by Ashwani Kumar Sharma in the House, the Minister said that as per the preliminary reports some damages have been caused to the Rabi crops in about 30 villages of Bishnah tehsil due to hailstorm on 4-5 February 2013. A detailed survey of losses is being conducted jointly by the field functionaries of revenue as well as Agriculture Production Department for preparation of Assami-wise lists/final damage report, said the Minister.
As soon as the said exercise is completed, necessary action with regard to the sanctioning and payment of relief in favour of the affected eligible beneficiaries will be taken in accordance with the State Disaster Response Fund norms, said the Minister.
