Devastating fire in godown, over dozen workers rescued

JAMMU, June 9: A devastating inferno broke out in old tyre godown near Taryath Morh in Bari Brahmana area of district Samba. However, police, fire fighers and Army launched a joint operation immediately and rescued over dozen workers, who got trapped in the fire while working.
The devastating fire broke out in old tyre godown “Shiva Traders” owned by Tarsem Lal and Arun Arora at around 1430 hours.  As the smoke started billowing out of the godown, police personnel deployed near Taryath Morh immediately informed their senior police officers and Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
Within shortest possible time, fire fighters and police team headed by SDPO Bari Brahmana Shehzad Salaria rushed to the spot and launched operation to douse the flames and to rescue the people trapped in the godown.
Deputy Director, Department of Fire and Emergency Services AK Wangoo also reached the spot to personally supervise the rescue operation.
After hectic efforts and displaying exemplary courage the fire fighter and police personnel managed to rescue over dozen workers. All the rescued workers were safe but in the state of shock due to sudden fire incident.
According to an eyewitness, the fire started in the godown where old tyres along with other scrap material were stored this afternoon. Within minutes, the fire engulfed the maximum area of the godown.
When contacted, Deputy Director, Department of Fire and Emergency Services AK Wangoo said that ten fire tenders from Gandhi Nagar Headquarters, Gangyal and Bari Brahmana Fire Stations were pressed into service and it took around three hours to the fire fighters to douse the flames. Around five fire tenders are on the spot to control any further damage, he added.
He informed that multi-purpose foam tenders were also used to douse the flames as it was very difficult to douse the flames of rubber tyres with water.
When contacted, SDPO Bari Brahmana Shehzad Salaria informed that the owners of the godown were getting repaired some electric fault in the godown. In the meantime, a spark emitted which led to this devastating fire incident, he added.
SDPO stated that fire tenders from Department and Fire and Emergency Services and Army were immediately pressed into services to douse the flames. Water tankers operating in the Bari Brahmana also extended their help. The fire was controlled at around 1750 hours with the joint efforts of police, Army and fire fighters, he added.
“Exact loss could not be ascertained yet, while a case in this regards has been registered and investigation started to ascertain the reason behind the fire incident”, SDPO said.
