Devise foolproof system of testing Unani drugs: Taj

SRINAGAR, Aug 21: Terming Unani and Indian System of Medicine (ISM) as age old systems of medicine which have worked through ages, Minister for Health & Medical Education, Taj Mohi-ud-Din today asked the members of the system to regain its faith among people which has severed due to quackery over the years and asked them to build confidence of people by working with dedication and effective patient care.
Inaugurating a day-long seminar on Medical Pluralism & Role of AYUSH doctors in primary healthcare delivery here today, the Minister asked the Unani and Ayurvedic doctors to work with dedication among masses and get the system of medicine regain its faith and credibility. He said continued quackery of past decades have led to a situation where patients don’t have that much of trust with their system of medicine. He said with the availability of latest diagnostic tools coupled with renewed dedication among the doctors, the system can have a turnaround given its strong historical base.
Mr. Taj suggested devising a foolproof system of testing Unani drugs for which he advised setting up of proper laboratories. He said once the Unani drugs are tested and verified properly like the Allopathic system it would automatically restore the faith among patients.
The Minister said people all around globe are now turning to traditional systems of medicine for their safe and side effect free treatments. He said Unani and Ayurvedic systems of medicine have cure to many ailments which don’t have cure in other systems of medicine. He said over the past years Government has converged AYUSH system with Allopathic system of medicine for better results on the ground.
In his address, Minister of State for Health & Medical Education, Nazir Ahmad Khan underlined the importance of Unani system of medicine in supplementing healthcare initiatives of the Government.  He said both AYUSH and Unani systems of medicine have a history of contributions to the healthcare and it needs to be restored to its past reputation.
Earlier, Director General, ISM, Dr. Abdul Kabir Dar highlighted the role and spread of ISM network in the State. He a 10 bedded AYUSH hospital has been established at each District hospital and work on two Unani hospitals in Srinagar and Jammu is in advanced stages.
