JAMMU, Nov 22: The Directorate of Tourism Jammu convened a pivotal meeting of the Advisory Committee here today to mark the initiation of new adventure areas and activities.
Vivekanand Rai, Director of Tourism Jammu, spearheaded the session, underscoring the vast potential of the region as a burgeoning hub for adventure tourism. Rai emphasized the need to allure tourists, particularly the youth, with an array of thrilling activities.
Asserting the proactive stance of the Tourism Department, Rai revealed ongoing efforts to augment adventure tourism offerings. Through extensive consultations with experts, he said, a comprehensive feasibility report has been compiled, focusing on expanding adventure activities with prudent investment.
These initiatives, he said, aimed at fostering employment opportunities and engaging the youth in the flourishing tourism sector.
Joint Director Tourism, Sunaina Sharma Mehta, disclosed key agenda points during the meeting. She outlined collaborative efforts with the Indian Kayaking & Canoeing Association (IKCA) and Jammu Adventure Sports Association (JASA) in conducting water surveys across all districts of Jammu Division. The surveys yielded valuable insights, pinpointing specific locations for diverse activities.
Mehta elaborated on potential adventure hotspots, ranging from paragliding at Aitham, Dhanwa, and Billo ki Paudi to water-based activities in locations like Jammu (Kattal – Battal). The offerings include Shikara rides, flatwater rafting, kayaking, and more. Serene spots like Surinsar and Mansar Lake offer opportunities for flatwater kayaking, family rafting, paddle boat rides, and stand-up paddle board rentals.
She said Doda presents itself as a hub for commercial whitewater rafting tours, whitewater kayaking, canoe slalom development, and stand-up paddle board tours. The Bhagliar dam backwaters in Ramban promise exciting opportunities like canoe sprint, flatwater kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, and jet boat tours, added the Joint Director Tourism.
“The comprehensive adventure tourism plan extends to regions like Reasi, Katra, Udhampur, Poonch, and Rajouri, each offering a unique blend of water-based and adrenaline-pumping activities,” she said.
Additionally, the introduction of pedal boating at Gatha Lake Bhaderwah and plans for a Paragliding Professional Training Course in Arunachal Pradesh demonstrate the commitment to diversify offerings.
The meeting was attended by key officials including Des Raj Bhagat, Ved Parkash, and Rajesh Lakhan.
