Disabled persons seek fulfilment of long-pending demands

Srinagar, Oct 16: A convention organized here today saw disabled individuals advocating for their rights, specifically focusing on social security and the implementation of provisions outlined in the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
Muralidharan, the General Secretary of the National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled (NPRD), criticized the Central Government for failing to implement the RPD Act, often citing lack of funds as an excuse.
The convention also highlighted the daily harassment faced by disabled women and children.
Key demands which were raised during the convention include full implementation of the Disability Law 2016, filling vacant posts for disabled individuals and regularizing temporary employees, and providing free passes to those with 40 percent disability.
The demands also included issuing BPL cards for deserving disabled individuals following SC guidelines, disbursing a monthly pension of Rs 5000 to the disabled, providing artificial limbs and waiving off GST on them, simplifying the disability certification process at the PHC level, offering interest-free loans for self-employment, and establishing special schools for the deaf, dumb, and blind at the district level.
CPI(M) leader Mohamad Yousuf Tarigami on the occasion emphasized the importance of their inclusion in political, social, economic, and cultural life, as well as developmental programs.
Tarigami highlighted the need for recruitment agencies to conduct special employment drives for educated individuals with disabilities and simplify the disability certification process.
