JAMMU, Feb 17: In response to complaints of overcharging and improper vehicle safety practices, Dr Mohammad Haseeb Mughal, DIG Traffic Jammu, along with senior traffic officials, visited the Jammu Bus Stand today.
The inspection aimed to address issues related to the fare rates charged by travel agencies and the use of tinted windows in buses.
During the visit, the DIG and his team inspected the travel operators’ stalls and found that many operators were not displaying the Government-approved fare lists, which is mandatory.
He instructed the operators to display these rate lists at prominent locations within three days. Failure to comply would lead to strict legal action.
Dr Mughal also emphasized that travel agencies must adhere to Government-approved fares and avoid any overcharging.
Additionally, he reminded operators to ensure their vehicles comply with Supreme Court guidelines regarding the use of tinted windows, as specified in the Avishek Goenka Vs Union of India case (2012).
The use of black films or other materials on windshields and side windows is illegal, and vehicles must meet the required Visible Light Transmittance (VLT) standards.
The DIG directed that traffic police helpline numbers be displayed prominently at the Bus Stand for public assistance regarding fare issues.
He also noted that the verification of the travel agencies’ GST filings and registrations would be closely monitored to ensure transparency and avoid any confusion.
Highlighting Jammu’s importance as a religious tourism destination, Dr Mughal stressed the need to prevent the operation of unregistered or illegal travel agencies at the Bus Stand.
He assured that regular inspections would be conducted to ensure operators comply with government regulations.
Lastly, the DIG urged all stakeholders to cooperate in making the public transport system safer and more transparent for commuters.
