JAMMU, Apr 1: Though Jammu and Kashmir is facing one after another natural calamity, the district level Disaster Management Plans have yet not been framed till date thereby exposing the non-seriousness with which this vital issue is handled by the concerned authorities.
This came to the fore from the reply of Minister for Relief and Rehabilitation to the question of Ajaz Ahmad Mir in the Legislative Assembly.
“The Disaster Management Plans of two districts—Ramban and Kupwara are at the advanced stages of finalization”, the Minister said, adding “at present discussions are being held with various agencies”.
“In a phased manner, the Disaster Management Plans of other districts will also be finalized”, he further said. However, the Minister claimed that various disaster management stores and temporary shelters have been constructed for use by the evacuated persons.
The Minister said that Government has constituted State Disaster Management Authority and District Disaster Management Authorities through notifications and these authorities are being strengthened. “The World Bank has agreed to provide Rs 150 crore for construction of Emergency Operation Centers and procurement of various machinery to be deployed during emergencies”, he added.
