Srinagar, Aug 2: Police today arrested a doctor settled in United Kingdom for his alleged militancy links from Central Kashmir’s district of Budgam.
Dr Shahid Ahmad Baba along with his brother, cousin and maternal uncle were on their way to airport from their residence at Chadoora when police intercepted their car.
They were on their way to Srinagar Airport to drop Dr Baba there for his further journey to United Kingdom. Police intercepted them and they were wisked away to Police Station Rajbagh for questioning.
Baba’s brother, cousin and his maternal uncle were scheduled to go to their relatives place to attend a function after dropping Dr Baba at the Airport. When they didn’t reach there, the family started inquiring for the whereabouts of the four people.
Police later carried out raids at Chrar-e-Sharif and Chadoora to make further arrests of his associates.
Sources said that Dr Baba who is settled in United Kingdom had arrived in Budgam some three months back and was here since then. He is being questioned at Rajbagh Police Station.
Sources said that police suspects that he is part of a local militant module in Kashmir and had activated a module here which has received Rs 10 lakh for their activities in Kashmir.
Top police officers when contacted about the incident expressed their ignorance. However, sources said that police is looking for more leads.
And security forces this evening cordoned off Kunzar area of Tangmarg in district Baramulla after reports of presence of two militants inside the village.
The 2 Rashtriya Rifles of Army and Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police Kunzar were conducting searches in the area when reports last came in.
One of the youth of village has recently joined militancy taking the number of active militants in Tangmarg area to 5. In North Kashmir over one dozen youth have joined the militancy this year.
The presence of militants in Tangmarg area, which is gateway to world famous tourist place of Gulmarg, is a big concern for security agencies. In April this year, two security forces personnel were killed during a gunbattle in Hardshoora area of Tangmarg in Baramulla district in a gun battle but the militants managed to flee from the cordon.
The security agencies have frequent reports of militant movement in Tangmarg area where two locals have joined the militancy this month only, taking the number of local militants in this area to 5.
