Doctor manhandled in Katra; accused held

KATRA, Aug 25: A doctor was allegedly manhandled by a patient and her attendant in CHC Katra today.
Police have arrested the accused couple, Pritam Singh and Jyoti Devi of Latti, Udhampur, and registered a case against them under the relevant sections of the law.
According to the eyewitnesses, the couple forcibly entered Dr Kavita Sharma’s OPD at CHC Katra this morning where they demanded that they be screened first, citing emergency.
When the couple was advised to wait for their turn in a queue, eyewitnesses said, they got offended and started misbehaving with the Doctor. While recording video of the doctor, they said, the couple also manhandled the doctor.
Soon after the incident, the hospital staff and colleagues of Dr Kavita Sharma sat on a Dharna inside the hospital premises, demanding arrest of the accused and security for the hospital staff.
Later, SDM Katra and SHO Katra assured the protesting doctors that the accused couple has been arrested and a case under relevant sections of the law has been registered against them.
On the assurance of the officers, the doctors and other hospital staff called off their protest to resume the duties.
In a statement, Dr Balvinder, President, Doctors Association Jammu, has expressed concern over the rising incidents of attacks on the medical fraternity.
“Dr Kavita is in a state of deep mental trauma after she has been attacked by the miscreants,” he said.
Dr Balvinder reiterated that the doctors are provided with adequate security in the hospitals across the UT.
He, however, appreciated SHO Katra, Nishant Gupta and DSP Katra, Surinder Singh for timely arrest of the accused.
Dr Manjeet, General Secretary, Doctors Association Jammu, Dr Amit, Secretary, and Dr Mukhtyar Khan, Secretary, also demanded that the accused be given exemplary punishment.
