SRINAGAR, Dec 15: A family from the old city Srinagar today alleged negligence on part of the doctors which has resulted in severe damage to their 14-month old girl child at a local ASG Eye Clinic operating from Qamerwari.
The family in this regard held a protest demonstration demanding action against the doctor who carried out the procedure along with the management of the Clinic for their “irresponsible” behaviour.
The aggrieved family members said that they took the baby girl Zikra Farooq, daughter of Farooq Ahmad Bhat of Aali Kadal to the ASG clinic-which is dedicated eye hospital-after she experiences watering and regular accumulation of debris in her eye.
“They initially asked us to carry out certain exercise; then we carried out certain tests and ultimately, we were told that there is a need for carrying out a procedure which needs to be conducted after giving her local anaesthesia,” father of the baby girl said.
Bhat said that the doctors told them that the procedure will take not more than 15 minutes and there was nothing to worry about. “It all happened in April this year and we said yes to the procedure, she was taken to the OT and it took at least 1 and a half-hour, we were worried but the doctors said that she was doing fine,” he said.
However, as per the family, when they finally saw their child, they knew something had happened. “Her condition was not fine and we insisted that she be taken to some other hospital,” he said.
Upon the insistence of the family, the baby girl was taken to SKIMS for treatment. “Upon reaching SKIMS, they shifted her to ICU stating that her brain had suffered damage. She remained there for 25 days and nothing happened,” they said.
The patient was also taken to PGI Chandigarh where the doctors said that while such incidents could happen, but she should have been taken to nearby tertiary care hospital for treatment as soon as she had complications.
While the ASG clinic has taken care of the treatment for some time, they have now categorically told the family to handle it all by themselves.
The family, however, is demanding that the action should be taken against those who responsible for the negligence.
The management of the hospital has maintained that the family had given consent before the procedure was carried out and that they have been helped on the humanitarian grounds.
