KATRA, Nov 29: The medical team at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Hospital achieved a significant breakthrough by successfully removing the central portion of the pancreas housing a tumor, ensuring the continued functionality of vital pancreatic functions.
The story centres on a 45-year-old female patient grappling with a substantial pancreatic tumor. Despite advice from numerous healthcare professionals to seek treatment beyond Jammu due to the associated risks and financial burden, the patient chose to consult senior surgical gastroenterologist Dr Suhail Khuroo at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Hospital.
After a meticulous evaluation, Dr Khuroo provided a glimmer of hope, assuring the patient that the intricate surgery was entirely feasible within the hospital’s facilities. Remarkably, the surgery was performed free-of-charge, courtesy of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, showcasing a compassionate commitment to healthcare excellence.
Under the skilled guidance of the surgical team, including Dr Suhail Khuroo, Dr Abhinav Choudhary (Consultant – Surgical Oncology), and Dr Anu Singh (Fellow in Surgical Gastroenterology), the patient underwent a successful surgical intervention.
Dr Suhail Khuroo, describing the procedure, explained that Central Pancreatectomy is a rare surgical technique preserving essential pancreatic functions vital for fat digestion and insulin regulation.
“The success of this procedure not only removed the tumor but also mitigated the risk of diabetes, providing the patient with a new lease of life,” he said in a statement.
