Dog squads assisting BSF men to foil infiltration bids, trace explosives on IB

JAMMU, Nov 5: To keep a check on infiltration bids, the dog squads of Border Security Force (BSF) are assisting troops guarding frontline on the international border in Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts of the State.

”Apart from helping in foiling infiltration bids, dog squads are also assisting to sniff out any explosive material along the border vis-a-vis helping troops standing tall round the clock to foil unholy designs of the enemy,” an official here said.

He said the dogs, trained in an academy near Tekanpur in Gwalior are acting as force multipliers for the border guards in hard times. ”Almost all the battalions have been maintaining at least a group of 5 trained dogs in their area of operation keeping in view their crucial role in the tracking and road opening party duties,” he asserted.

”To prevent infiltration bids and to check the presence of explosives buried under the ground, sniffers are pressed into service in the forward areas along the IB to trace it,” said an officer.

The tracker dogs undergo nine-month-long comprehensive and specialised training while sniffer dogs require only six-month-long training before they are deployed in field area along with the foot soldiers, he added.

“In the wake of closure of passes with the onset of winters and fresh snowfall on higher reaches, militants shift focus from LoC towards IB to infiltrate,” he said and added that trained dogs are acting as a biggest deterrent for the anti-nationals and preventing them from sneaking into our territory.
