Dogra Art Museum, JU celebrate International Museum Day

JAMMU, May 18: Dogra Art Museum and University of Jammu (JU) today celebrated International Museum Day with theme of the year ‘Museums, Sustainability and Well being’.
To celebrate the Day, Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums, Jammu and Kashmir, organized a programme at Dogra Art Museum, Mubarak Mandi.
The Programme was kick started by chief guest Rajinder Sharma (Mayor Jammu) in presence of Dr Sangeeta Sharma (Assistant Director, Archives, Archaeology and Museums Jammu) and Mukul Magotra (Curator, Dogra Art Museum, Jammu).
On the occasion, the Mayor unveiled the collection of Indian Postal Stamps of pre 1947 era that have been added to the collection of Dogra Art Museum and put on the display for the first time.
A power point presentation on various monuments of Jammu division, describing their historical significance was also shown to the visitors as a special attraction to the event.
Dr Sangeeta Sharma, while speaking on the occasion, told importance of museums in imparting cultural and non- formal education.
In University of Jammu, Centre for Studies in Museology and Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani Museum of Heritage organized an interactive program between the four university museums (Herbarium, Zoological Museum, Wadia Museum and Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani Museum of Heritage) to celebrate the International Museum Day.
The resource persons from respective museums interacted with the participants through PowerPoint presentations. They emphasized the role of university museums- exploring the sustainability of museums in the present scenario and the different museum techniques used by them.
Chief guest Prof Rajnikant (Dean Research Studies JU), inaugurated the exhibition highlighting the cultural and natural heritage of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. He mentioned the importance of museums in keeping the fading heritage alive and handing it over to the next generation.
Prof Alka Sharma, In-charge Director, Centre for Studies in Museology, and Dr Malay Dey, Assistant Professor, Centre for Studies in Museology, JU also spoke on the occasion.
Prof Veenu Kaul, HoD, Department of Botany; faculty members, scholars, and students from various departments of the University also graced the occasion.
