Dogri adaptation of Rabindra Nath Tagore’s ‘Drishrtidaan’ staged

JAMMU, Apr 26: ‘Kumu, the dramatic adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore’s short story ‘Drishtidaan’, in Dogri, was performed by Samooh Theatre, at Gandhi Nagar Government Women College Auditorium, here today.
Coming as the third presentation in the ongoing Tagore Theater festival, the play written by Dr Sudhir Mahajan was directed by Ravinder Sharma. The play deals with the pathos and wishes of a child bride who gets blind after marriage. Kumu’s wish to live like any other ordinary women gets a setback when her doctor husband thinks of marrying another women. But in the end he realizes his mistake and returns to her and treats her as Devi.
The use of Tagore’s poetry further enhanced the appeal of the play, which highlights women characters as a strong emtities.
The cast of the play included Suneedhi Sharma as ‘Kumu’, Aditi Aryan as child bride, Ravinder Sharma as Avinash, Vikram Khatri as brother, Mridul Raj Anand as Doctor, Kanika Sharma as Lavanya, Rohit Chib as Man, Usha Sharma as Bua, Himani Jamwal as Himangi, Garima Sharma as Kummu’s mother, Shubam, Rohit Bains and Arun as Kumu’s brothers, Lucky Gupta as Muslim.
Surinder Manhas designed the background music; make up was by Shivdev Singh, lights by Lucky Gupta, sound by Lokesh, sets by Avinash Lakhontra. Background singers were Deepali Wattal, Marina Jamwal while choreography was by Narayan Prasad.
Tomorrow Kashmiri play by Bhoorang Theatre Group will be staged.
