JAMMU, Jan 20: Dogri Sanstha organized a musical evening wherein ‘Geets’ of Sahitya Akademi Awarded poet Gianeshwar Sharma were presented by talented local singers— Apoorva Jamwal, Gursharan Kour, Suraj Singh and Shyam Sajan.
This was one of the programs in a series in which Dogri Sanstha is showcasing the poetry of a particular poet in each program where poet is also present.
The program was presided over by Saujanya Sharma, Director Tourism, who said there was no better way to popularize the poetry, especially the Geets, than putting it across the public, through musical renderings. He praised the young singers Apoorva and Gursharan and compared the singing to the best in the country. He also appreciated the poetic genius of Gianeshwar Sharma.
Earlier Anjali Sharma, Assistant Director, Doordarshan, Jammu, who was guest of honour on the occasion, said that it is very heartening to see that literary and cultural programs concerning Dogri are being held very frequently and most of them are of high quality and standard, like the present program. This speaks a lot of vibrancy and vitality of Dogri language, literature and culture. She urged upon all Dogras to speak Dogri and encourage their children also to speak in their mother tongue.
Prof Lalit Magotra, president of the Dogri Sanstha, highlighted the importance of ongoing series of programs based on the poetry of the Dogri writers. He made an appeal to the persons associated with music industry to bring out quality and tasteful music CDs based on good Dogri poetry. He said that music and drama are two most effective vehicles to popularize literature among masses.
The musical composition of ‘Geets’ was rendered by veteran composer Shyam Sajan.
Those accompanying the singers on instruments include Rakesh Anand on flute, Karan Malhotra on tabla and Sanjay Paashi on Guitar.
