AGARTALA, Aug 17:  Devolution of Indian currency and hike of US dollar value, trade between India and Bangladesh through Akhaura Checkpost of Agartala has come to a grind halt and import from Bangladesh has been continued to be halted for a week after celebration of Eid last week.
According to Indo-Bangladesh border trade organisation officials here today, import of fish and other edible from Bangladesh was suspended since July 9 because of celebration of Eid and when Bangladesh had lifted the suspension on August 10, Indian traders stopped business.
“The US dollar price, only mode of international trade in the sector has hiked to Rs 62 and as a result the price of the imported materials have gone very high but the traders are still uncertain about the market demand,” Said Habul Biswas, official of Indo-Bangladesh traders association. According to Mr Biswas, trade volume between India and Bangladesh has reduced to 15 percent and except stone boulders nothing was imported from Bangladesh over a month due to escalating price of US dollar.
The long suspension of international trade at Akhaura, fish supply in the state has severely been affected and shortage of fish import rose the price per kilogram fish to Rs 300-1200 in all the city markets.
Tripura is still 40 percent fish for catering the demands of domestic requirement from West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and largely from Bangladesh, said Mr Biswas adding as a result, price of fresh vegetables were also gone high.
