DoP opens Post Office at Kargil

JAMMU, Nov 22: A Post Office equipped with latest technology has been opened at Kargil, near the Line of Control, by Department of Posts (DoP).
The Post Office at Kargil will provide services like Speed Post, eMO, ePost, iMO and Savings Bank, Chief Postmaster General, J&K, John Samuel said after inaugurating the building.
The building has been constructed on an area of one kanal at the cost of about Rs 40 lakh and is department’s the first building in Kargil district.
“In Kargil district this is the first Post Office which has been functioning in a departmental building”, he said, adding one more new Mail Van will be provided between Ladakh and Kargil to facilitate the transmission of mails.
Samuel said the entire Ladakh region will come under ‘Samporna Bachat Yojna’ scheme, wherein each household will have a savings account either in the Post Office or at the bank.
With 109 Post Offices in Ladakh the Post Office will be in a better position to provide financial inclusion, he said requesting the district administration to use the Post Offices for payment of scholarships to the school children.
He said the department will consider new buildings for Post Offices once the land is provided at Drass and Padum.
Among others present were Haji Ghulam Amir Kamran, Acting CEC LAHDC, Kargil, Phunchok Tashi, Ex-councilor, Haji Mohd Qazim, Councilor, Zanskar, Feroz Ahmed, MLA Zanskar, Ghulam Hassan, Additional Divisional Commissioner, local populace and officials from the department.
