UDHAMPUR, May 27: Property worth over Rs 30 lakhs was damaged when a double-storey house was completely gutted in a major fire incident in Sud Mahadev area of Chenani tehsil in Udhampur district this afternoon.
Reports reaching here said that the house of one Vijay Kumar, resident of Guj Morha ( Hamlet), near Sud Mahadev, suddenly caught fire under mysterious circumstances at around 4 pm on Monday. As the house was mainly made up of timber, the entire building was engulfed in the big flames within minutes.
The family members ran out for the safety while the villagers helped the family to save their cattle from the nearby shed. The police had also arrived the spot and joined rescue operation. Despite pouring water by the locals and policemen on the flames, the fire could not be controlled. The Sarpanch and Naib Sarpanch of the area alleged that SDM Chenani did not pick up phone calls, while there was very poor response from the Chenani Fire Station.
