Jammu, Jan 25: Dr Attri Professor of Surgery in GMC Srinagar and a renowned Laparoscopic Surgeon of the country ,delivered a lecture on ‘obesity epidemic and role of weight loss surgery ‘ organised by ASCOMS Sidhra. “We all know obesity is increasing day by in the world where US tops the list of most obese and super obese people India is not far behind including J&K,”. Dr Attri said.
“Obesity is the second most common cause of preventable death after smoking . Obese and superobese patients are more prone to diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemias, high cholesterol , heart attacks, strokes, cancer , infertility in females, joints distruction and breathing problems, ” he said.
“So control of obesity and overweight is of paramount importance both for individuals as well as Governments as obesity is a big financial burden on both individuals and Governments. We can control weight by lifestyle modifications, diet and medicines to a certain limit after that these measures are not effective as we regain weight once we stop these medicines,” Dr Attri said, adding here comes the role of Weight Control Surgery or Bariatric Surgery or Metabolic Surgery which has a great role in controlling weight in obese and superobese people.
