JAMMU, Mar 22: What can be described his most pioneering work for Kashmiri language, Dr R L Bhat’s latest book ‘Rationalized Roman for Kashmiri’ hit the stands here, today.
The book was released at a glittering function attended by the who-is-who of literature and art, at K L Sehgal Hall. The function was held in a purely literary atmosphere with leading literatuers, Justice (retd) B L Bhat, Dr R L Shant, Dr P N Trichal, Dr K L Chowdhury and Vijay Bakaya MLC in the presidium besides the author.
The literary ambience began with the noted writer, commentator Pradeep Khodbaly’s paper on the work. Khodbaly spoke of the incisive work which takes a full sweep of the scripts used for writing Kashmiri. Dr Roshan Saraf, secretary Samprati, compared the programe, read out a poem of his written specially for the occasion.
While speaking on the book Dr Bhat said over the last decades, the exiled community of Kashmiri has been faced with the great challenge to preserve the attachment of the younger generations of the displaced Kashmiris to their mother tongue. This has necessitated development of modifications suitable for writing Kashmiri in the scripts with which the younger generation is conversant. In this quest Samprati had brought out a modification of the Dev Nagri script, he added.
Developed in a logical manner, the author has applied the principles of Brahmi alphabet to English letters and produced an easy and adaptable scheme. As R L Bhat explained in a detailed power-point presentation, the RRK scheme is not a random assignment of the letters but a rationalization of the English alphabet.
Dr K L Chowdhury pointed out that ‘Rationalized Roman For Kashmiri’ is also a comprehensive statement on the irrational nature of the English script. It points out the fallacies of the script which have always been around us, but did not get noticed, he added. He termed it a good book and said that Dr Bhat has evolved a rational and logical script.
Dr R L Shant in his address spoke about the relevance of RRK in preserving the language and for those who have to quote Kashmiri Hindi or Urdu words and sentences in their papers and researchers. Dr P N Trichal said that the work is a commendable effort to try to bring some rationality in the script used for writing English itself. Vijay Bakaya said that there is need to follow up on this work to make it popular and use for writing Kashmiri which a person unacquainted with the Hindi/Urdu script can use.
