Dr Jalal succumbs at AIIMS

Srinagar, Aug 17: Former Director of Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura and Kashmir’s leading cardiologist Dr Sheikh Jalal-ud-Din, who was shot at by militants last month, passed away at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi today.
Dr Jalal, 64, was critically injured in a militant attack on July 18 that left two of his police guards dead at Pampore in Pulwama district of South Kashmir.
The former Director along with his security guards were fired at by militants near his residence at Namblabal in Pampore, said police.
Jalal’s guards died on-the-spot, the cardiologist was hit by a bullet in the left eye and was rushed to SKIMS Soura in a critical condition.
The attack came a day after a top Hizbul Mujahideen militant was killed in a grenade explosion at Batmaloo while he was being shifted to Baramulla district jail in a police vehicle.
Dr Jalal’s body will be flown to Srinagar tomorrow morning and he will be buried in his ancestral graveyard at Pampore in South Kashmir.
Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) expressed shock over Dr Jalal’s demise. DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan, in a statement, condoled the demise of Dr Jalal said that his death has come as a shock to the whole medical fraternity.
“The medical fraternity is aggrieved by his tragic death. The attack on Dr Jalal was cowardly, dastardly and shameful. Those who did it cannot be humans,” Dr Hassan said.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah has condoled the demise of  Dr. Jalal-ud-Din describing it a great loss to the society in general and to doctor fraternity in particular.
In his condolence message, the Chief Minister has expressed solidarity with the bereaved family and conveyed his sympathy. He also prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul.
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr. Farooq Abdullah has also expressed grief over the demise of Dr. Jalal.
In his separate message to the bereaved family, Dr. Farooq conveyed his sympathy to them.
Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad has also expressed deep sorrow on the passing away of Dr  Jalal-ud-Din.
In a message, Mr Azad said :  “it is most unfortunate that Dr Jalal-ud-Din, is no more with us. He was a very eminent Cardiologist of Valley and a caring doctor, who has been rendering high class super-specialty services to the people of Valley, even after his superannuation”.
Azad said that Dr Jalal, though a doctor of high repute,  used his knowledge and skills for the well being of the people of State without any material considerations, notwithstanding the fact he could have got a lucrative job in any best private hospital of the country or even abroad, but he chose to serve his countrymen.  Mr. Azad said that          Dr Jalal belonged to that rare breed of medical professionals who considered it their duty and privilege to serve the people.
Earlier during the day, Mr Azad along with his wife,  Mrs Shameem Azad called on the bereaved wife and son of Dr Jalal at AIIMS, New Delhi to convey their condolences. Both of them prayed to God almighty to give courage to the bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss and rest the departed soul in peace.
Prof. Saif-ud-Din Soz,  MP & President J&K Pradesh Congress Committee  has expressed deepest anguish at the sad demise of Dr. Jalal-ud-Din. “It was so tragic that he was fired upon by the gun men, all though he was a private citizen and in the people’s estimation he was an innocent person”, he said.
“It is very sad  that Dr. Jalal-ud-Din  could not be revived to life through treatment  at AIIMS. My deepest  condolences to the bereaved family”, he added.
He called upon the Government  to nab the killers of  Dr. Jalal-ud-Din and bring them to justice.
Chairman, Legislative Council, Amrit Malhotra and the Speaker, Legislative Assembly, Mubarak Gul also expressed grief and sorrow over the death of Dr. Jalal.
Extending sympathies with the bereaved family, they said that State lost astute medicos. Both prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul.
People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has also expressed deep shock and grief over the death of renowned cardiologist Dr Jalal.
Expressing deep sympathies with the family of Dr Jalal, PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed recalled his tire less services which he rendered for the people of the State. He said Dr Jalal will be remembered for long and his demise is an irreparable loss to the State.
PDP president Mehbooba Mufti also expressed her deep grief over the demise of Dr Jalal. She expressed her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Both the leaders prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.
Senior PDP leaders, Muzaffar Hussain Baig, party General Secretary Mohammad Dilawar Mir, senior leader Tariq Hameed Qarra, Party chief spokesperson Naeem Akhtar, Dr Sameer Koul, PDP Legislators, Party leaders Mohammad Khurshid Alam, Ab Hameed Kosheen, and others also expressed their condolences to the family of Late Dr Jalal.
