Dr Jitendra addresses Lucknow Diabetes meet

LUCKNOW, Nov 17: Renowned Diabetologist, National Professor of Diabetes and chairman National Diabetes Scientific Committee, Dr Jitendra Singh today reiterated that 21st century management of Diabetes particularly at a young age is not limited to mere control of Blood Sugar but the focus is on protection of heart and other vital organs. He was addressing a two-day Diabetes meet of Diabetologists and physicians on its inaugural day here today,
Dr Jitendra Singh who was an eminent faculty member in the meet made an evidence based postulation that cholesterol lowering statin group of drugs ought to be prescribed even to those diabetic individuals whose cholesterol or lipid levels are normal because these drugs help in preventing heart attack and brain stroke.
At the conference organized by Uttar Pradesh Diabetes Association at Scientific Convention Center,King George’s Medical University (KGMU) here, Dr Jitendra Singh described Diabetes as the strongest risk factor for heart attack and stated that heart related diseases are responsible for 60 to 75% mortality among Diabetics. Using power point projections,he suggested a catchy “Mantra” to avoid such an eventuality and said that the “ABC” of successful diabetes management is A) Control of A1C which reflects average Blood Sugar level B) Control of Blood Pressure and C) Control of Cholestrol.
Referring to “Insulin Resistance” as the mother of all the modern day diseases ,Dr Jitendra Singh explained its association not only with Diabetes but also with high blood pressure ,cholesterol disorders etc. and emphasized that in times ahead, the approach will have to be pro-active to achieve lower target levels of all these parameters. Not only do the life style modifications need to be institutionalized as a regimen of treatment but these also need to be supplemented with certain drugs offering a preventive role,he added.
Dr Jitendra Singh said that in a country as heterogenous as India,every region and every State has a different distinct disease profile calling for exclusive considerations.From this point of view , he complimented the organisers of UP Diabetes meet for their initiative to draw attention to the problem of Diabetes as it exists in Central India.
