AHMEDABAD, Feb 16: At a time when in the wake of infamous Delhi rape and murder case the entire nation is discussing ways and means to check crime against women, how can we ignore the fact that untreated Diabetes in pregnancy resulting in complications for mother or risk to her unborn baby also amounts to crime against women.
This statement was made by Dr Jitendra Singh, National Professor of Diabetes and Chairman National Scientific Committee (RSSDI), while addressing a gathering of country’s leading Diabetologists and Gynaecologists on the opening day of 2-day annual National Conference of “Diabetes in Pregnancy” being held here under the patronage of WHO Convenor & Emeritus Professor of Diabetology, Dr V. Seshiah.
Among others, President-elect of “International Diabetes Federation”(IDF) Dr S.M.Sadikot, President-elect API Dr Shashank Joshi, Organising Secretary of the conference Dr Banshi Saboo and senior Diabetologists Dr O.P.Gupta, Dr A.K.Das and Dr Mayur Patel were also present during the inaugural ceremony.
Dr Jitendra Singh, who was an invited faculty at the meet, said that even as Diabetes epidemic is rapidly spreading across the country, the future challenge for next 25 years will be Diabetes in pregnancy which has begun to take its toll in a big way.
Emphasizing on universal screening for Diabetes in all pregnant women and very strict control of Blood Sugar levels for a pregnant woman particularly during first three months of pregnancy, Dr Jitendra Singh said any woman visiting any doctor for any ailment during any stage of her pregnancy should first immediately be advised to undergo a Blood Sugar test or Glucose Tolerance test.
