NEW DELHI, Aug 7 : Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Earth Sciences, MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh, who is also a renowned Diabetologist, has advocated mandatory Blood Sugar test for every pregnant woman, even if she does not have any symptoms or is not a known Diabetic..
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the two-day 15th Annual Conference of the “Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group India” (DIPSI 2021), Dr Jitendra Singh said that diagnosis of Diabetes is vital to prevent the disease in the future generation.
The inaugural session of the conference was attended, among others, by some of the renowned national and international names in the field of Diabetes, including Emirates Professor and Dr B.C. Roy Award winner Dr V. Seshiah from Chennai, Dr V. Balaji from Chennai, Prof A K Das from Punduchary, Prof Shashank Joshi from Mumbai, Prof Sidharth Das from Cuttack, Prof P V Rao from Hyderabad, Dr Sunil Gupta from Nagpur and Dr Banshi Saboo from Ahmedabad. Welcome address was delivered by President DIPSI, Dr Rajeev Chawla from Delhi.
Dr Jitendra Singh said, any diagnostic criteria or procedure should be simple, do-able, economical and evidence based, and in this aspect diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) with a “Single Test Procedure”, recommended by “Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group India (DIPSI)” and endorsed by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt of India, is an affordable test to meet the requirement of all strata of society.
This Test Procedure has been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), International Federation of Gynecologists and Obstetricians (FIGO) and International Diabetes Federation (IDF), he said.
The Minister said that the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has mandated screening of all pregnant women for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) as part of routine antenatal package according to the country’s 2014 national guidelines.
Dr. Jitendra Singh mentioned that Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a rapidly escalating global public health problem with rising prevalence among all age groups. He said that, in India alone, GDM complicates nearly four million pregnancies annually.
Dr. Jitendra Singh also virtually released DIPSI 2021 Guidelines and a book penned by Prof. V Seshaiah, Founder Patron, DIPSI.
