NEW DELHI, Feb 25: In the first – ever initiative of its kind, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh has announced the constituting of an exclusive “NITI Aayog Forum” for Northeast.
Briefing about the decision, which reiterates the Modi Government’s special focus on peripheral states like North East and Jammu & Kashmir, Dr Jitendra Singh disclosed said the “NITI Forum” for North East will have its Secretariat office in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region(DoNER) and the Forum will be co-chaired by the Vice Chairman of the Niti Ayog and the DoNER Minister.
The exclusive NITI Aayog Forum, Dr Jitendra Singh said, will work with the objective to identify various constraints in the way of accelerated, inclusive and sustainable economic growth of the eight states of the North Eastern region of India. It will also recommend suitable interventions for addressing the identified constraints, he said. In addition, the forum will also be tasked to review the development status in the North East, he said.
Besides Vice Chairman NITI Aayog and DoNER Minister, the members of the Forum will also include Secretaries of Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Railways, Power, Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, New & Renewable Energy, Health and Family welfare, Human Resource Development and Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The Chief Secretaries all the eight states of the North Eastern region will also be members of the Forum. In addition, Secretary, North East Council(NEC) will be Member Secretary, while Joint Secretary (North East) in MHA and several other experts from other fields will also be members.
Meanwhile, an African delegation called on Dr Jitendra Singh to discuss various areas of mutual engagement with India including the North Eastern Region.
