JAMMU, Mar 16: Endocrinology Department of Aligarh Muslim University organized International Diabetes meet.
During the meet, Dr Jitendra Singh, National Professor of Diabetes and Chairman National Scientific Committee (RSSDI) was invited to deliver the lecture.
Speaking on the theme of treatment of Diabetes in Pregnancy, Dr Jitendra Singh said that in the field of diabetes, the 21st century will be the century of Genes and Stem cell therapy with primary focus on prevention of future diabetes and prevention of its occurrence in the yet-to-be born child of a pregnant mother.
Dr Jitendra Singh said even though Insulin is still universally accepted as the safest option for treating diabetes during pregnancy, there have emerged in recent years a wide spectrum of oral drugs in form of tablets and pills which have been tried for treatment of Diabetes in pregnancy without causing any adverse effect on the foetus or its growth.
Dr Jitendra Singh said in the next quarter of a century the entire focus would be to manage a diabetic pregnant woman with such precision that the child in her womb does not inherit even slightest tendency or risk to develop diabetes after birth or later in life.
If such a prospect can be achieved, then it will be a historic breakthrough in interrupting the mother to child transmission of diabetes risk thus halting the generation to generation march of diabetes, which is responsible for the rapidly spreading diabetes epidemic in India, he said.
With the world focus now on human rights of the child, it is time to pledge for achieving the goal of freedom from diabetes for the next generation, Dr Jitendra Singh said in conclusion.
